The symbol's explicit Protobuf number, or null when unnumbered. The reader records all-or-nothing per enum, so a null from it means "trivially sequential from 0" rather than "unknown". A hand-authored schema may instead number only some values; the writer then gives each unnumbered one the next number no other value claims.
